    Be the System

    By Coach Kip | August 17, 2007

I heard a great quote about coaching the other day. It goes like this

“Coaching is a systematic way to solving problems that everyone can understand.”

I apologize to whomever said that because I don’t know who it is, I was only half paying attention to a lecture on business and it was said so quickly that it did not hit me until later.

This quote; simple, easy to remember, and easy to follow, embodies our philosophy of coaching. It is far too often that coaches try to make things overly complicated, and hard to follow. College and Pro teams come up with extravagant schemes and game plans but it does not have to be that way with youth sports. Actually it cannot be that way with youth sports.

When dealing with young people you need to keep things very simple. It just needs to be that way with the people you are dealing with. And that goes for players all the way up to high school. The emphasis must be on the systematic way of solving problems. Put them in the best place and the best position that they can be in and let them do their thing. Through experience, and fundamentals they will learn what needs to be done. They will make mistakes, and they will make you mad, but you must let them learn.
